5. This is a rare photo taken in winter camp 1864 showing then- Brig. Gen. PJO and the regiment he originally recruited in St. Louis and Belleville IL in late 1861. Although he didn't lead them personally for more than a few days because of his rapid promotion, they served in his division for Pea Ridge, Chattanooga and the Atlanta campaign. He always kept a warm place for them; these officers were the ones who presented him with a ceremonial sword when he got promoted. (The one in the Missouri Historical Society)
PJO is marked number 1. He is about 9th from the right, close to the center, standing with his arms behind him. 4. This is one of three wells and sinkholes in which bodies were thrown after the battle. This one was located near Du Bois's Union battery. 3. Most of the battle was fought around here, with the rebels repeatedly charging up the hill and the Federals charging down. After several hours nothing had changed. PJO was in the thick of the fight throughout the day. Around 10 am General Lyon, the Union leader, was killed near here and about an hour later the Federals began a withdrawal to Springfield, about 10 miles north. The Confederates did not pursue.
This battlefield is hard to photograph because of new tree growth in the past 150 years. 2. This valley is where the rebels were camped. Price's HQ was in the little house. Wilson's Creek is in the dip at the center.This pic was taken standing on the low rise later known as Bloody Hill where most of the battle took place. When PJO and the others crested the hill at dawn, they saw thousands of tents, animals and wagons down below. The Union army had about 10,000 men to the Confederates' about 15,000.
This was PJO's first big battle. He was amajor and led about 200 men, a quarter of whom were killed or injured here. Their role was first as skirmishers and then protecting both the right and left Union flanks at various times throughout the day. 1. This shallow creek is the center of this battle. It runs through a dip in the low hills of the area, not really a ravine in the Western sense. The Confederates were camped in open areas on both sides of the creek when they were surprised by a much smaller Union army led by Nathaniel Lyon. 11. The tavern is offstage to the right. The Confederates were also up on the ridge. After the artillery barrage, PJO's men led a wild charge across this field into the woods and up the hill, finding little resistance because the rebels had mostly slipped out, ending the battle. The next morning PJO rode out into the fields just west of the tavern and found a low knoll (in the center rear of the pic) elevated enough that the Union artillery could play on the rebel position near the tavern. After a two-hour artillery duel, the Confederates were out of ammo and began to withdraw. 9. Meanwhile, another battle was going on near the tavern, about a mile away. Through the day, Van Dorn, attacking up this road and through the woods on both sides, drove the outnumbered Federals back from the tavern about a half-mile until they were dangerously near their own supply train. From his original position behind the fence, PJO immediately swung his entire force 90 degrees so that they faced east toward the camera, and let off a great volley that drove the rebels back into the woods. The Confederates were sure this was a new addition to the Union strength and besides, couldn't find Hebert, who had been captured. 6. Across the road at the right (east) side of the cornfield was a thick stand of woods. Before McCulloch was killed, the Confederates started four regiments under Hebert into these woods to flank the Federals. Fortunately, PJO was reinforced about then with Col. 5. But the line held: PJO's artillery drove off the pursuing rebel cavalry. Once he had his line under control, PJO sent skirmishers from the 36th IL north across the field behind the far fence to detect the advance of the rebel infantry through the trees. While there they shot and killed both McCulloch and McIntosh, the two Confederate commanders. 4. This shot faces south. The Confederates were where I am standing, crossing in column from west to east and not expecting any Union contact. Although greatly outnumbered, PJO immediately had his three guns fire from the trees in the distance, stopping the column in its tracks. Then, before his own cavalry could charge, the rebel cavalry wheeled, went screaming across this field and nearly annihilated PJO's little group, outnumbered maybe five to one.
